Rothenburg ob der Tauber, know as the home to one of Europe's best and most unique Christmas markets, is also home to one of Europe's best and most unique wine festivals.
This city was almost destroyed by war in the 1600s, when an army of 60,000 was camped just outside of town, waiting to conquer. The opposing General Von Tilly offered the townspeople one way out of certain destruction - if one of their citizens could down a large jug of wine in a single draught.
Mayor Nusch rose to the challenge, drank the tankard dry, and saved the city, an act that is celebrated annually with a large festival, including lot of wine tasting and food pairing, plus vibrant live entertainment, befitting the joy of the occasion.
And this isn't just any wine - Huffington Post wine critic Mary Orlin calls the regional Franconian wines "the best German wine you've never heard of". These dry white wines are a refreshing summer treat, grown in mineral-rich soil that gives them a unique rich flavor you will find nowhere else.
