Trier Express

You don't have to go to Rome to experience the Roman Empire!

Note: This event has already passed.

Trier is a southwestern German city in the Moselle wine region, near the Luxembourg border. Founded by the Romans, it contains several well-preserved Roman structures.

Porta Nigra (Black Gate) is Trier’s most famous landmark. The Romans built it in the 2nd century AD. From up on top, you’ll have a great view of the city.

Trier also boast the ruins of a Roman imperial bath house from the 4th century AD. Explore the maze like passages and imagine yourself as a Roman patron.

The Roman Amphitheater, built in the 1st century AD, seats 20,000. For 5 centuries it hoasted a gruesome line-up of gladiator fights, animal baiting, and executions.

The Basilika was the throne room of Emperor Constantine and is the largest surviving room from ancient times without the support of columns.

If these architectural wonders aren't enough Roman culture for you, visit the Archeological Museum. The museum houses the world's largest collection of gold coins, plus intricate Roman mosaics, imposing monuments, and a miniature model depicting the city suring  Roman times. Making it a family trip? We recommend the special audio guides for children to make history come alive.

If your children aren't impressed by Roman artifacts, there's a Toy Museum where you’ll find more than 5,000 play things from ancient to modern times.
