New Year’s Day - Holiday Observance

In observance of the New Year’s holiday on Thursday, January 1, Family and MWR facilities may be closed or have modified hours. Please refer to the facility pages for hours of operation.

The idea of celebrating the “new year” began with the ancient Mesopotamians over 4,000 years ago—long before calendars looked anything like today’s. Their New Year festival, Akitu, wasn’t tied to a date but to the spring planting season, marking rebirth, renewal, and the start of agricultural cycles. It lasted 11 days and included elaborate ceremonies, feasts, and even the symbolic “renewing” of the king’s power. Basically, humans have been throwing New Year parties since the dawn of civilization!

As we reflect on this season of gratitude, Family and MWR extends warm wishes for a safe and happy holiday to our entire community.
